Robert Reich -- Trump's Washington Hotel is a Blatant Example of a President Profiting from His Office

Trump’s hotel empire continues to be a very contentious part of his presidency. “The DC hotel has become a hangout for Republicans and those who hope to influence the president.”

Trump's Washington hotel is now openly profiting from the presidency. He promised he wouldn't profit from stays by foreign governments and diplomats, but the hotel says it is not keeping track.

Every penny from this spike in business goes into the president's pocket, a direct violation of the "emoluments clause" of the Constitution.

The hotel has become a means of currying favor with the administration away from public view. Velvet ropes restrict access to conference rooms, there is no public record of the meetings that take place, and little is known about how much special-interest groups spend. On any given day, a stream of government officials and lobbyists pass through the hotel out of sight of the public.

I can't think of a more blatant example of a president profiting from his office.

A Washington Post investigation showed the DC hotel has become a hangout for Republicans and those who hope to influence the president.
