CNN exclusive: Grand jury subpoenas issued in FBI's Russia investigation

Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey because of the way he handled the probe into Hillary Clinton’s emails?

Who’s kidding who?

Comey was overseeing a counterintelligence probe into possible connections between President Trump and Russia and interference in the U.S. 2016 presidential campaign.

The most obvious and believable reason is that Comey may have been getting close to the truth. The Russia investigation was closing in on Trump. Just days before Comey’s firing, Comey had asked for more resources for the investigation.

There is a fear that now that Comey is out of the way the investigation will be derailed.

“The immediate triggers for Trump’s firing of Comey were the FBI’s request for additional funds for the investigation into Trump’s ties with Russia, and the ramping-up of the investigation into former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. According to reports, prosecutors have issued grand jury subpoenas to Flynn’s associates as part of the FBI’s investigation into possible Russian collusion with the Trump campaign.

“Trump is not just a liar. That's well established. He may also be a traitor. For the sake of our democracy, we need to know,” — Robert Reich

Reich also reports that “In a letter sent today to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, 24 groups and individuals with expertise in government integrity and accountability called on him ‘to promptly appoint an independent Special Counsel, as authorized by Justice Department regulations, to now oversee and conduct the Russia investigation that Director Comey was leading for the FBI when he was fired yesterday.’ The recusal of Attorney General Jeff Sessions from any role in the Russia investigations has left Rosenstein as the senior Justice Department official in charge of this investigation.

“To put it simply, President Trump yesterday inappropriately fired the FBI Director who was leading an investigation into whether the Trump presidential campaign colluded with Russian agents to influence the results of the 2016 presidential election.”
