Vox -- The Americans waiting to welcome refugees who may never come

Trump's cruelty and hatred will never represent the true values of the American people. As his administration fights to keep refugees out, communities across the country are ready to welcome them with open arms. Volunteers have collected donations, found housing, and sorted out all the arrival details, but its all for nothing as long as Trump's refugee ban remains in effect. These local groups have even sprouted up in conservative areas. In one Arkansas community, hundreds of people have signed up to help.

This is the America I know and love: a generous nation that embraces immigrants. Whenever you despair about the future of this country, remember that the vast majority of Americans are still kind and compassionate people.

"In Washington, the Trump administration is fighting hard to maintain its temporary ban on refugees entering the United States who don’t have a close family relationship with someone already here.

"Federal courts have ruled that refugees shouldn’t be included in the government’s travel ban, which went into effect in modified form at the end of June thanks to the Supreme Court, because each refugee has a “bona fide relationship” with the US-based nonprofit that has agreed to resettle them: to find them housing and a job, help them learn English, and acclimate them to America, all within 90 days.

"The Trump administration argues that refugee-resettlement organizations aren’t a “bona fide” relationship."
