When House Speaker Paul Ryan, his cohorts, and Republicans, in general, are convinced that prosperity is somehow proof of a good, moral person, I guess you don't have to have any real morals. Or values. Or empathy. Or even a spine. Ryan and his cohorts always seem to come up with despicable policy. (adapted from a Facebook comment by Angela Cox Sleeter.)
House Republicans have cooked up another scheme to take from the poor to give to the rich. They have buried a provision in their budget proposal that would make it harder for working families to qualify for earned-income tax credits. New requirements would put those eligible through a lengthy and complicated IRS audit before they can receive a refund.
Republicans claim the program will cut down on tax fraud, when in reality the biggest fraudsters are wealthy corporations who exploit loopholes and stash profits abroad.
The real goal here is to milk even more money out of the poor to pay for massive tax cuts for the rich. Just when you think income inequality in this country couldn't get any worse, Republicans find a way to drive the wedge even deeper.
