On Wednesday, an article of impeachment against President Donald Trump accusing him of obstructing justice during the federal investigation into Russia’s interference in the 2016 election was introduced by Democratic Representative Brad Sherman. Democrat Congressman Al Green of Texas co-sponsored the article
This is the first time a lawmaker has offered an article of impeachment against Trump.
The article of impeachment is likely dead on arrival. Republicans control the House of Representatives by a 46-seat advantage.
And, of course, White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said, “I think that is utterly and completely ridiculous and a political game at its worst.”
In filing his article, Sherman argues that Trump’s firing of FBI director James Comey is an act of obstructing justice and "high crimes and misdemeanors." The FBI, under Comey’s leadership, was investigating whether the Trump campaign colluded with the Russian government to swing the 2016 election in Trump’s favor. Comey alleged that Trump pressured him to drop the FBI’s investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn. Trump's different explanations of Comey’s firing were full of “repeated instances of incorrect information, including in written form, and a number of basic contradictions.”
“In all of this, Donald John Trump has acted in a manner contrary to his trust as President and subversive of constitutional government, to the great prejudice of the cause of law and justice and to the manifest injury of the people of the United States. Wherefore, Donald John Trump, by such conduct, warrants impeachment and trial, and removal from office,” the article of impeachment states.
